Read the following paragraph carefully and fill in the blank with the appropriate form of the verb given in bracket :

1. It was Kumbh-Fair. People from far and near …………….(come) to Haridwar for a holy dip. Just then, a golden fish jumped out of the water and fell into his hands. The man was surprised to see this beautiful gift from the holy river. But, being a kind religious man, he took pity on the fish and gently lowered it into the river. The fish soon appeared in the form of an angel and blessed the man for his kindness.
